Queering the Táin - 2021

'Queering the Táin' offers a contemporary perspective on digital art making practice in Ireland. The piece speaks to the validity of online and digital space, acting as a monument to acknowledge the real world impact of our online interactions.

This work takes a queer perspective, subverting the narrative of the old Irish epic 'The Táin' and appropriating it's characters 'Friucht and Rucht', showing the two warriors as lovers. The subject matter emulates existing monuments in Dublin city. However, in this case being made to celebrate a long history of queer spaces existing either digitally or through media such as zines and newspaper columns.

This sculpture references these non-physical queer spaces in it's production. Being made piece by piece in clay, scanned into 3D software and being placed together having never existed in the physical world. The piece is made to be circulated via these non-physical media, printed matter or online exhibition.
